International Women's Week: We Don't Stop!

Over the past one hundred years, we have not stopped contributing artistically, economically, politically, and socially in our communities.

March 8 is International Women's Day (IWD), the highlight of International Women's Week (IWW). Each year at this time, we celebrate progress toward equality for women and their full participation; reflect on current challenges and consider future steps in achieving equality for all women, in all aspects of their lives.

Bottle Tree Productions and the Wellington Street Theatre are proud to support this event with a free showing of Ghost of the Tree, Charles Robertson's award-winning play about seven generations of women trapped in a doomed family tree. Starring Hannah Smith (Mrs. Lovett in Bottle Tree Productions' Sweeney Todd) and Megan Ready-Walters(Joanna in Sweeney Todd) This play has already captured a number of awards across Ontario, and played at the Ontario Housing Conference (Homelessness) and at a National Conference on Gender Violence.

The recent Tim Burton movie starred Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter as the partners in gore. Adam Eliot and Hannah Smith lend their gifted voices to the merchants of mayhem. Anton Kaduck is a revelation as the hanging judge. Megan Ready-Walters and her sweet soprano voice makes her the perfect ingenue. The Gothic church that is The Wellington Street Theatre is the perfect environment for Fleet Street and its sordid neighbourhood. Adam Eliot's Sweeney Todd arrives back in England after being unjustly sentenced for crimes he did not commit. All he ever loved has been taken from him and he is looking for revenge. He falls in with Hannah Smith's Mrs. Lovett, and between them they go on a murderous spree, which ultimately consumes them in the fires of hate.
