Auditions happen all year-round, and as usual, you need a monologue to help you land a role. The absolutely best way to have a good monolouge is to have read a large number of plays and choose monologues from them. By doing that, you understand the character, the story, and how to act the monologue. You won't be tripped up by auditors asking about the piece. It is impossible to know if the casting director knows the play that you have chosen a monologue from, or not, so answers to questions about your choices are important.
But how do you know what plays might contain monologues that you could use? How many plays do you have to borrow from the library to find even one suitable monologue? Can you possibly read enough of them in time to find that two-minute piece of writing that can help you to sell yourself as the actor for the role? Unless you have been studying for a few years, then the answer to that last question is likely, 'no'.
Here, we have a list of free monologues for men, women, teens, girls and boys. They are reproduced with permission of the authors, who are contemporary writers currently working in several countries, or they are from works that are in the public domain. Feel free to browse the selections, read what you like, and even print them out so that you can study them in preparation. We do strongly recommend that you consider this free monologue listing as a starting point - a sort or reverse library - where you will find a free monologue that suits your purposes, and then you will read the play that it comes from.
If you find that one of the free monologues that you like is by a writer who entered our one-act playwriting contest, we encourage you to give them (and us!) feedback about it. You can either send email to us and we can forward it, or you can see their pages on our site and contact the writers directly.
Additionally, we are happy to offer short suggestions to questions on our FaceBook page. We also offer monologue or other coaching in person to those in our area, or by video worldwide, for a small fee. Email us to find out how!
Enjoy our selection of free monologues, and break a leg at your next audition!
