Monologues for children under nine years old

Monologues for children, older children, teens, and adults appear on this and the next several pages. Where possible, we have added downloads for your convenience.

There are very few speaking parts for very young children, and even fewer monologues. By very young children, we mean under 9 years old. One of the most effective ways to have young children audition is to give them a very familiar passage from a well-loved poet, or a well-loved children's author. The important thing for young children is that they are charming and as clear as possible. They should have their monologues memorised. Cute goes a very long way in casting young children, but they must show in an audition that they are prepared to work to the best of their ability.

Be very protective of your child and ALWAYS be with them in a theatre or on a set, even during auditions. ALWAYS. If you are told that parents or guardians are not allowed, then that should be a huge red flag. Thank the directors for their time and take your child home.

It is fine to have a young child audition with a light piece. Two minutes is very likely too much for a young child. Try for a good representation that they are happy with, and throw the stop watch out of the window.
